Well, I am using SCSI connection with my Canon FS4000 and VueScan still refuses to start without libusb, so in my point of view libusb *is* a run-time dependency. > 1) Gimp, mozilla, and libusb are not run-time depends. I use Document Scanner and Xsane (either directly or via the GIMP) that both work for me since adding ipp-usb and sane-airscan.

Initially I tried the free version of VueScan to see if a purchase was worthwhile - unfortunately my device is not included in the list of compatible items. Both ipp-usb and sane-airscan can be downloaded from. It was also recommended I try sane-airscan and that too was very effective.

The solution in many cases, (including my own with a Canon TS5050 MFP,) was to install ipp-usb and remove ippusbxd (my device was connected via usb so utilized ippusbxd in LM19.3 but ippusbxd proved problematical in LM20 whereas its replacement, ipp-usb, did work effectively). This affected scanning capability when with multi-function peripherals, the printer was working. I know you want VueScan up and running especially if you are using a paid for version but have you checked to see if the basic scanning program Document Scanner (formerly Simple scan) recognizes your device? Normall it would but it may be that after having to reinstall LM20 you may be seeing a problem faced by others when they upgraded LM19 versions to LM20.
